Heather Williams
Civil litigation has been the exclusive focus of Heather Williams’ practice since her call to the Bar of Ontario in 1991.
Heather defends professional liability claims against lawyers and health professionals. She also handles a variety of general, commercial, insurance and employment matters.
Heather is a director of Pro Bono Law Ontario and co-chairs a committee of the Law Society of Upper Canada's "Justicia" project, which is aimed at retaining and promoting women in the private practice of law.
Heather is a past-President (2008) of the County of Carleton Law Association and, with William Simpson, Q.C., is co-chair of the CCLA's annual civil litigation conference at Montebello, Quebec.
With her partner Steve Cavanagh, Heather taught trial advocacy at uOttawa's School of Common Law for several years and was the senior civil litigation instructor in Ottawa for the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Bar Admission Course.
Since 2009, Heather has been included in The Best Lawyers in Canada, in the specialty of Insurance Law.
She has been recognized in Martindale-Hubbell's peer review ranking.
In October, 2010, Heather received the President's Award from the Ottawa chapter of the Women's Law Association of Ontario. This award is given to "a woman who has made a substantial contribution to the legal community as an academic, adjudicator, litigator, solicitor or author".
In June, 2011, Heather was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of The Advocates' Society, a position that she will hold for the next three years.
A native of Lachine, Quebec, Heather's first career was in radio. After earning a journalism degree from Carleton University in 1983, Heather worked as a reporter and announcer in Ottawa and Toronto before going to law school at uOttawa. She then articled at what is now Nelligan O'Brien Payne LLP in Ottawa and remained with that firm as an associate and then a partner until March, 2002, when she co-founded Cavanagh Williams with Steve Cavanagh. Cavanagh Williams became Cavanagh Williams Conway Baxter LLP when Tom Conway and Colin Baxter joined in September, 2009.
Heather likes to spend time with a large, four-footed grey friend at a stable east of Ottawa. She has completed seven marathons (but started eight). She is learning to play golf but thinks that Mark Twain might have been right.
